GOOD IDEA OR BAD?
Hey there! It's Amy McCready with Positive Parenting Solutions, and I'm coming to you with a coaching call that you're going to want to listen to.
But first, let me ask you a question: Do you use technology? Or rather take away technology as leverage to get your kids to do their homework or their family jobs?
If so, is that a good idea? Or not so much?
Well, the mom in this coaching call was wondering the same thing. She said, “Amy, is it okay to leverage technology to get my son to do what I need him to do?”
Well, my answer to that may surprise you.
Parent:
I'm not sure if I'm doing this all correctly. But I leveraged technology time because I feel like that's pretty much the only thing that I can leverage. So, is it okay to leverage it in many different scenarios… like, can you use it for literally anything that you need to get done? For example, for homework that needs to be done or if he’s not listening to me … then I’m going to take away technology time. I don't even know how to approach this. (And he’s an amazing negotiator.)
amy:
The first thing that I want to say is, yes, you can leverage technology. But I'm going to give you a couple of examples. So, let's talk about leveraging versus threatening.
Threatening is... “If you don't listen to me, then I'm taking away your technology.”
Can you feel how that feels very overpowering? It's a threat. But anytime we are threatened — what happens? Defenses go up and they're going to push back.
Leveraging, on the other hand, is making it part of a When-Then Routine.
When you've completed X, Y, and Z, THEN you could have 30 minutes of technology time. Do you feel the difference there?
Parent:
Yes, absolutely. It’s a huge difference. Can I do When-Then in the heat of the moment?

AMY:
Absolutely, you can use When-Then in the heat of the moment. However, I want you to be aware of how often that's happening.
If you're doing a lot of When-Thens in the heat of the moment, it probably means we need to revisit our regular routines. When I was talking to Vanessa on this call, I mentioned that our morning, afterschool, and evening routines should be set up in a When-Then format. Because if we can address most of the stuff that has to be done in those well-established routines, then we don't have to use When-Then in the heat of the moment.
Right now, you are in a threatening mode: “Do this or else!” rather than using the power of the tools that you have with the When-Then Routine.
Once you establish your When-Then Routines, we don't even need to discuss it every day. It's just like... this is what we do... the routine becomes the boss!
For example: When your list is done, then you can have your technology time.
And if your son says, "But Mom, I just want to watch one show!” You respond (with a smile on your face) and say: “What does the routine say?” And then point to the routine.
So homework becomes part of an afterschool When-Then Routine: When you've had your snack, cleaned up from snack, finished your homework, and maybe had some outside play time, then you can have technology time before dinner.
But be sure to put a curfew on the technology time so they get everything done before the tech curfew hits. And then the other thing that I want you to remember is that technology is not your only leverage.

Continuing on in this call, we talked about lots of other strategies that this parent can use to make her routines run more smoothly and get her son to do what he was supposed to do — without a lot of nagging and reminding and yelling from her.

For example there will be LIVE training events like Asked & Answered Live with Amy via Zoom but if you can’t attend live, you can catch the replay on-demand in our private Inner Circle Facebook community.
Every Sunday, you'll receive a suggested “Learning Plan’ laying out a helpful way to prepare for the week ahead. Knowing what to expect each day will give you an idea of which days you’d like to drop into the Inner Circle for extra help.

Do I need a Facebook account to participate in The Inner Circle?
In short, yes.
The Inner Circle operates within a private, secure Facebook group (accessible only to other Inner Circle members). While you may already be engaged in our Bigs and Littles Facebook groups for members, the Inner Circle is entirely different.
In The Inner Circle, we’ll work through the 7-Step Parenting Success System® together. With a weekly deep-dive into each of the 36 tools, you’ll hold yourself and other community members accountable to accomplish all you want to achieve in your parenting.
